On the 30th of October 2024, SeaMark hosted the webinar “Entrepreneurship in the European Seaweed Industry, focusing on young entrepreneurship and start-ups.

Starting with a presentations introducing the EU4Algae initiative by Laura Maragna from EurA, and the SeaMark project by Urd G. Bak from Ocean Rainforest

After this, Urd continued with a presentation on seaweed cultivation, followed by Benoit Quéguineur from Algaia. He explained what Algaia does as a biorefinery, as well as their role in SeaMark.

Running up was the start-up pitching session where three start-ups were invited to pitch their offers. They all got questions and feedback from the panel consisting of Urd and Benoit, as well as Morten from Nofima and Ava van Vliet from Hatch Blue Innovation. Morten works in SeaMark with WP7: Go-to-Market strategies. Ava works with investments in the blue bioeconomy. 

The last session features some other projects and initiatives happening now to support seaweed entrepreneurs n Europe.

Maeve Edwards from Irish Seaweed Consultancy presented the I3-4-Seaweed project, showcasing good investment opportunities from the I3 programme from EISMEA. The project invests in seaweed innovation across Europe, and enforces interregional collaboration aimed at scaling, demonstrating, and ensuring market readiness of business ventures within the macroalgae/seaweed sector.

Frederick Bruce from SUBMARINER/S.Pro showcased some current activities from their project portfolio, and other tools providing opportunities for investments and matchmaking.

Last out, Katharina Kurzweil from SUBMARINER presented the Blue Bio Techpreneurs project. The project fosters the development of transversal and entrepreneurial skills in the blue biotechnology sector to match talent with industry needs and drive innovation, mainly though hackathons, webinars and the upcoming MOOC (Massive Open Online Course).

74 people attended the event, and it resulted in new members to BlueBioMatch where SeaMark hosts the Algae WG and the market platform. There was also a startup reaching out to Ocean Rainforest directly after to initiate a collaboration.
