On 30th of January 2025 the SUBMARINER Working Group Meeting on monitoring took place. The Algae WG took a big part, featuring algae related monitoring practices and tools from SeaMark, I3-4-Seaweed, EU4Algae and Glasgow University.
Frederick Bruce (S.Pro) presented work done in EU4Algae showing that monitoring is crucial for both licensing and credit schemes. Also socioeconomic indicators and incentives for the algae community to submit data anonymously are vital to ensure fair and effective policy.
Barbara Proenca from the project I3-4-Seaweed presented HAEDES´ monitoring tools to utilise advanced analytics to mitigate uncertainty and reduce operational risks through accurate predictions to help farmers increase their efficiency and scalability.
Sophie Koch from Sjokovin talked about monitoring of seaweed aquaculture within SeaMark, and how it is essential to ensure it does not cause harm while maximising the benefits. Key factors to track include limiting conditions, indicators, and barriers, helping to foresee social constraints and proactively integrating ecosystems. A report will become available here on seamark.eu summer of 2025.
Calum Young from Glasgow University presented a newly started project aiming to develop a predictive model for harmful biofouling in seaweed farms, using smart sensors, eDNA sampling, and environmental data to identify early indicators.
The next WG meeting will be on the topic of side-stream valorisation, and take place on 7th of May. Register already now in BlueBioMatch!https://bluebiomatch.hivebrite.com/networks/events/170896
