European farming of seaweed is at an early stage, and seaweed is still seen as a novel crop with many challenges across the entire supply chain. Yet, it is a crop that is recognised within Europe and worldwide for its contribution to regenerative aquaculture and the development of products and services that support many of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Reducing the cost of production by increasing crop productivity is one of the most important challenges facing the industry today. As with terrestrial agriculture of every other cultivated crop, seaweed productivity could also be boosted through better utilisation of genetic resources through strain development.
